Following the recent guidelines from NICE it has been shown that bilateral cochlear implantation is both cost and clinically effective for children. If felt clinically appropraite we would potentially offer simultaneous surgery to all new children. Adults are currently only been offered bilateral implantation if they have dual sensory impairment i.e. have visual failure.
The question of bilateral implantation in adults will be reviewed by NICE from 2011. However, clinical trials will be required.
